The National Emblem of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a palm tree and two Arabian swords intersecting each other. The palm tree is a significant symbol of this desert Kingdom. Every part of the palm tree, from bark to the fruit, is utilized by the people of Saudi Arabia. It is found in abundance in different varieties throughout the Kingdom.
The two Arabian swords intersecting each other symbolizes justice and strength and represent the struggle it took to join the desert tribes into the unified Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The US Federation for Middle East Peace is a 501 (c)3 Non Governmental Organization with special consultative status to the UN ECOSOC (Economic Social Council) and accredited by the UN Dept. of Public Information. Its core programs vary from peace building efforts, youth sports and children rights, to women empowerment and interfaith initiatives. And for her tireless endeavors in these fronts, Mrs. Sally Kader, President of USFMEP, received a prestigious recognition during the Second UN MDGs (Millenium Development Goals) Award Ceremony, on Sept. 19, 2010, at the Grand Ballroom Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC. She dedicated the evening in honor of her dear son, Sam, whom at age 30 lost a three-week battle to hospital acquired deadly infectious bacteria called MRSA (Super bug) after suffering from back pain.

On September 18, inductees to the 2010 AACUSA (Asian American Coalition USA) Inc. Organized in its second season, the event which commemorated the group’s Fourth Cultural Extravaganza, honored seven outstanding individuals within their respective Asian communities.

“I am grateful to God for this opportunity to serve my community,” said Imam Shamsi Ali, Chairman of the Indonesian Muslim Community in New York. “I am proud to be Indonesian; honored to have worked alongside religious leaders in bridging the gap between Muslims and non-Muslims, because although we come from diverse backgrounds, we share common grounds and are still one and [that] our rich heritage is what makes us truly unique individuals and a group as a whole.”

The President and founder of AACUSA Inc., Dr. Parveen C. Chopra, acknowledged the soft-spoken 43-year-old Imam as “close friend, a person of integrity and inspiration to Asian Americans” who plays active roles in fostering greater understanding about Islam, particularly post 9/11 when Muslim Americans face tougher challenges to mounting anti-Muslim rhetoric; and as recent as debates over the Park 51 project near Ground Zero, amidst mid elections year which has ignited fear mongering beyond hatred and intolerance.

Mr. Chopra added that Imam Ali has reached across the division and became part of the Muslims’ voice at the United Nations forums, churches, synagogues, the NYPD, FBI and major news outlets including, ABC, PBS, BBC World, CNN, Fox News, National Geographic, Al-Jazeera and the Hallmark Channel Imam.

A visible face of Islam, Imam Shamsi Ali has held multiple high level positions throughout his 14 years of residing in New York. Currently, he is the Imam at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York, which is the city’s largest mosque located in 96th street Manhattan, where he leads congregation of Friday prayers. He is also the Director of Jamaica Muslim Center in Queens.

Well known in the interfaith circles, Imam Ali serves as an Advisory Board member to the Tanenbaum Center and Federation for Middle East Peace. He is Chairman Board of Trustees for the Asean Muslim Federation of North America, board member for the Partnership of Faith in New York, as well as, cofounder of the UNCC (Universal Clergy Coalition-International).

Last year, Imam Ali joined ranks of former boxing heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, six former US presidents and Nobel Prize winners when receiving the 23rd Ellis Island Medals of Honor Award 2009. This prestigious non military gold medal award ceremony, which is sponsored annually by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO), pays homage to the America’s cultural mosaic; and is the highest recognition given to influential immigrants in making great impacts to the lives of others through compassion and philanthropy.

In the past, Imam Ali participated in the 2006 International Conference of Imams and Rabbis for Peace in Seville Spain, and the first National Summit of Imams and Rabbis of North America in 2007. He represented the Muslim community at an interfaith discussion on Religions and Sustainable Development at the White House in 2007, and participated in the 2008 Transatlantic Interfaith Dialogue in Frankfurt, Germany. Furthermore, He was among a few religious leaders invited to accompany the then President George W. Bush at the wreckage site of World Trade Center, and, represented his community during the “Yankee Stadium Prayer for America” with former President Bill Clinton and wife, Hillary Clinton.

Imam Ali was appointed “Ambassador for Peace” by the International Religious Federation in 2002, and a recipient of the 2008 ICLI Interfaith Award. In 2006, he was named one of seven most influential religious leaders in New York City by New York Magazine. He was also chosen as one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center in Jordan and Georgetown University.

He was raised in Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, Indonesia; and currently resides in Jamaica, Queens, with wife Muthia and five children.

Since 1988, the AACUSA Inc. promotes awareness of Asian cultural identities and integrates voices of local communities into mainstream America through social services, education and economic assistance. The organization which is an umbrella of 14 Asian country members, from India and Bangladesh to Nepal and Taiwan, established the Jackson Heights Merchants Associations in 1988 and the Flushing Merchants Association in 1989.

Among the inductees was Dr. Binod P. Shah, Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine from Nepal, for his contributions to assisting flood victims in Dhaka Bangladesh and Nepal, as well as, providing free health camps for immigrants and underprivileged in Queens.

A Lifetime Achievement Award was given to the Honorable Edward P. Mangano, an American born Nassau County Executive for serving his community of 1.3 million people through jobs creation and tax reduction.

<img src="http://ar1ta.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/nassau-county-exec-edward-mangano.jpg?w=300&h=212" alt="" title="Nassau County Exec.
The award ceremony is a glimpse into classic American story, where immigrants flock the country in search of new beginning, where many succeed in beating the odds and while making individual contributions, are striving to improving the lives of others. In an open letter, New York State Governor David A. Paterson wrote, “[You] reflect upon your past success and future goals, as you celebrate a rich culture and honor members of the community who advance your mission … All those affiliated with the AAC can be proud of their efforts that enable many in the Asian American community achieve the American Dream and realize accomplishments that have positive result for our whole society.”

Youssou D'Nour & The Etoile De Dakar Band

“Muslims don’t just pray at mosques. We want to have fun, too” Youssou D’Sour

When tensions flare in the Middle East, some Americans don’t see them through lenses of political, historical or socio-economic grievances. They opt to equate Muslims as congenital terrorists. Although the media has much at fault for fueling misconceptions, the US government failed to close a widening chasm with the Muslim world. Meanwhile there are approximately seven million Muslims in the US of which 600,000 reside in New York City.

Now, the tide begins to turn. President Obama’s speech in Cairo vowed to forge a new relationship, moving forward with “courage, rectitude, resolve,” and on June 6, 2009, New Yorkers backed him as they welcomed the Muslim Voices: Arts and Ideas festival in Brooklyn, home to 100,000 American Muslims.

Observe and learn! asked Rachel Cooper, director of Cultural Program and Performing Arts at Asia Society. Her organization has partnered with the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and New York University Center for Dialogue to spearhead a global tapestry of Muslim cultural performances from countries as far away as Indonesia and Senegal. Through conference, music, art, dance, film, and storytelling the program aims to foster mutual respect that leads to understanding and coexistence among people.

“It’s about voices, expressions from all different permutations with a focus to coming together,” said Rachael Cooper who is fluent in Bahasa Indonesia and has been with Asia Society since 1993. “First you listen. Then you’ll understand.”

So far, the response to this cultural diplomacy has been nothing but positive. People came in droves to experience the voices on stage performed by Muslim artists and spoken in their native tongues. They paid particular attention to musician Youssou D’Nour, headlining his sold-out concert to kick off the 10 day celebration.

“I don’t even know where to begin,” said Rasuul Muray, a non-Muslim poet from Brooklyn who identifies his religion as African American. “We share common ancestors, but never seen him before tonight. I think it’s his voice, his energy that speaks to me.”

That Friday night, a large multi ethnic crowd packed the scene at a lobby and spilled over to outside BAM Howard Gilman Opera House. They wore outfits ranging from casual jeans and suits to traditional tunics, complete with head wraps, kufis and shawls. They were African Americans, Latin Americans, and South Asian descents, some of whom were non-English speakers, chatting incessantly while shielding the rain under a landing strip of green-filtered lighting attached to the building’s glass canopy. From June 5th to 7th, a similar décor illuminated the Empire State Building to help promote the color of Islam as a religion of peace and tolerance.

At eight o’clock, Mayor Michael Bloomberg paid a brief and surprise visit to BAM. In the past, he had been pressured to take a more balanced public position on Israel-Gaza war. But before the program officially started, he took the stage in show of support and greeted the audience with Assalam’alaikum, peace be upon you.

Then the stage turned into total darkness when Syamsi Ali stepped into a spotlight and began to recite verse 13 surah Al-Hujurat from the Holy Qur’an. Almost like singing, his high pitched voice emanated in modulating Arabic melodies, matching text per text according to its proper grammatical rules while stretching and shortening the vowels in each sentence.

The 42 year old Imam from the Islamic Cultural Center New York is recipient of 2009 Ellis Island Medal of Honor who also chairs Al-Hikmah, the Indonesian Community Mosque in Queens. He echoed a message of unity, calling all men of different nations or races to embrace each other’s cultures since humans share common roots from Adam and Eve.

Following the Qur’anic recitation the Ushaaq Ensemble performed world premiere of Salam Suite led by Iraqi-American composer/musician Amir El Saffar. The six men group featured a Bangladesh born vocalist Marina Alam chanting “Ya nabi Salam alaika” in her floating high notes and magnificent breath control.

Ms. Alam started singing at age four and has a wide repertoire performing Sufi tradition, Indian classical and soul jazz. She hopes to use her medium to “show the beautiful side [of Islam] and not the extremism.”

What proceeded was a highly anticipated performance. Applauds intensified as the star of the evening, singer Youssou D’Nour (pronounce yousue en-dure) approached the microphone and brought down the house to a non-stop sheer euphoria.

“Sing,” he said in between thunderous cheers, wearing a silver Kaffan, ankle length robe from Senegal. “You can sing; you can dance; so you enjoy the music … Muslims don’t just pray at mosques. We want to have fun, too.”

And for over two hours, the Senegalese most celebrated artist kept the audience mesmerized through a plethora of global sound of music; from traditional African to contemporary jazz; from pop and R&B to Cuban and Arabia – all riding on various instruments: electric guitar, synthesizer and drums.

As Youssou sang “Bamba,” “Birima” and “Immigres,” everyone was on their feet, clapping to the exuberant rhythm of Mbalax (pronounced umm bah-laakh), which is a mixed arrays of percussion (sabar) and traditional talking drum (tamar), improvising and crisscrossing each other’s rhythms in a form of dialogues, while making “mbung-mbung” sound either in two or three pattern beats. At times Youssou’s voice was in winding and pleading sound; other times in catchy, short phrases and calling out repetitions. “Do you hear me father Bamba? Do you hear me father Bamba?” he sang.

“Amazing,” said Kevin Nathaniel Hylton, a blonde gridlocked musician in dyed shirt who plays ancient African hands instrument called mbira. “Just amazing. The way the music came out. It’s just like water. It pulls you in.”

Like many, Mr. Hylton danced to impress. He climbed over the stage to give dollar bills to band members while doing an Afro-Mauritanian dance, the Wango with arms swinging, head shaking and fancy footwork.

Youssou showed his gift of vocal range and storytelling through collections of devotional songs, which he delivered powerfully yet tenderly in Senegalese language of Wolof, weaving lyrics that transcend power of Muslim faith and illuminating its rich traditions and history. He spoke of different side of Islam the media rarely mentions and its worldwide acceptance, because “Islam is not just for the Arabs, but for over 95% Senegalese … so, there are a lot of Muslims.”

In between performances, two giant screens displayed images of famous Senegalese mosques and congregation of devout Muslims praying. Youssou sent out public invitation to experience Touba in central Senegal, which is a Holy city where its founder Shaikh Aamadu Bàmba Mbàkke is laid to rest.

A special dedication in Aamadu’s honor is mentioned through award winning song, “Amadu Bamba.” Youssou considered him as a guide to his Mouridism brotherhood and for his relentless struggle to fighting colonialism, “not through physical [violence,] but through [five principles] of Islam.”

Youssou was born in 1959 in impoverished Medina section of Dakar, the capitol of Senegal, where today it is city of hospitality brimming with life and where fish is the number one consumption. He was raised to embrace Sufism and learned the art of musical oral storytelling from his Griot grandmother who died at age 96 in 2006. It is to her “Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love” is dedicated. The 104 minute movie about his spiritual journey and love of Africa was directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, a 30 year old Princeton educated filmmaker .

After performing at communities and ceremonial gatherings, Youssou earned a nickname “The little Prince of Dakar.” He was 14 at the time and later had a radio station ushered his career. By 1984, he formed Super `Etoile de Dakar band (Superstar of Dakar). Three of the members are still touring with him and performed at BAM. They are Habib Faye (base), Babacar Faye (percussion) and Assane Thiam (tamar, which is Senegalese small drum played with one hand and long thin stick and is tucked under the armpit). The rest of the group included Abdoulaye Lo (drums), Jean Philippe Rykiel (keyboards), Jimi Mbaye and Omar Sow (guitar), Birame Dieng and Moustapha Mbaye (vocal).

Youssou’s rise to fame came laden in controversies. In 2003, he made headlines when he cancelled his US tour in a protest over Iraq invasion. The following year his album Egypt – although eventually won a Grammy Award – was initially boycotted for two years in Senegal. Critics labeled it blasphemous, accusing him to desecrating Islam since it marries religious theme with popular music. In the end Senegalese reconsidered upon learning outside positive reaction towards the album, and how it could help promote Islam.

As a prolific humanitarian who was named UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Youssou helped fight against malaria by encouraging Africans to use nets. He shared the stage touring internationally with western pop stars Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Bono and Paul Simon.

Youssou, a father of two sons, successful media mogul, band leader, poet, song writer, drummer and devout Muslim closed the evening with “New Africa,” a soundtrack to “Youssou D’Nour: I Bring What I love,” in line with message behind the Muslim Voices: peace and unity.

He had seen her from afar, yet her message of hope remains clear. By May 9, after over a decade of residing in New York, Syamsi Ali visited Lady Liberty to receive the 2009 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. The first Indonesian-born was among 100 accomplished immigrants saluted for inspiring others to renewing the American Dream.

That Saturday evening on Ellis Island, Syamsi Ali emerged from behind a red carpet military escort, a group that included Latino Pop-Star icon, Wall Street executives and politicians. He wore white two piece suits with black shirt and his favorite kufi, the black one with orange and white embroidery. Deep sense of pride for his country reflected in tears as he glanced overhead, seeing Indonesia’s insignia in red and white along kaleidoscopic displays of American and foreign national flags.

“It’s a historic visit for me. I never imagined it,” said Syamsi Ali, senior imam at the Islamic Cultural Center New York (ICCNY). He paused, smiling; his dark trimmed mustache stretched; his dimples indented his cheeks. “So, I thank God for the opportunity. I am proud for my community, proud to be Indonesian.”

As Syamsi Ali took his front row place on stage, the US Air Force Band of Liberty serenaded presentations of US Color Guards and hoisting of the Star Spangled Banner. To his sides were five religious leaders, including Rabbi Alvin Kass, Venerable Lama Wangdak and Reverend Timothy O’Neill.

“This year, we have some remarkable people from every faith that we haven’t had in the past,” said Nasser J. Kazeminy, CEO of the National Ethnic Coalitions Organizations (NECO) and official sponsor of the 23rd Annual Ellis Island Medals of Honor. “I am especially honored; we have an Islamic imam joining us, a remarkable man.” He turned sideways nodding to Syamsi Ali, whom in 2006 the New York Magazine cited “Most Influential Person in Religion.”

“This is America at its best,” Chairman Kazeminy continued. “They are immigrants, children of immigrants, who together make America a land like no other.”

Syamsi Ali’s recognition by NECO is a prominent example of how Islam has become more recognized in the US. American Muslims are integral part of society, thriving economically and spending up to $170 billion on consumer products per year, according to global Ad agency JWT.

Yet, success came in a hefty price tag. Terrorism is still front and center, causing many Muslims to continue feeling misunderstood and aggrieved over media stereotypes that link them to extremism. And after September 11, stringent travel restrictions were applied to those coming from the Muslim world, depleting immigration influx into the US.

“We must be able to reach out, to show true face of Islam,” said Syamsi Ali, who also chairs Al-Hikmah, the Indonesian Muslim Community Mosque in Queens. “Because when you talk about Islam, you talk about American fundamental values that respect freedom, religious tolerance, justice and liberty. These rights are protected by the [US] Constitution. So as long as it represents your culture, it is not a threat.”

A revered Qur’an scholar who speaks fluent Arabic and Urdu, Imam Syamsi Ali is himself a visible face of Islam. From synagogues and churches to lecture halls and Yankees stadium, from the White House to Roman Catholic Pope, he relentlessly shares Islamic teachings and compatibility to democracy through successive engagements in interfaith programs.

Imam Syamsi Ali hopes the education will bridge gaps between American diverse communities; to live side by side in harmonious environment – like good neighbors – in order to find a common ground based on mutual respect and understanding. He said building unity refers to the Holy Qur’an that humankind is created from a male and female, and that God made different races and tribes for people to embrace and learn from one another (Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13).

Venerable Lama Pema Wangdak (director of the Palden Sakya Centers & the Vikramsila Foundation in NY), first Tibetian born to receive the medal

“Only when we have that commitment to build peace,” Imam Syamsi Ali said. “We won’t have a peaceful world, and that is what I am trying my best.”

The task is a tall order on part of the 42 year old son of landowners from Bulukumba District of South Sulawesi province, Indonesia, an area known for its traditional wooden schooners called Pinisi. It requires courage and discipline, traits he inherited from adolescent years while mastering martial arts skills of Pencak Silat. He faced challenges from within his own community in a protest over his moderate views on Islam, but has accepted the critiques as opportunity to invite other Muslims to reflect and think systematically on problems and their long term solutions.

“Difficulty is just one of a color in life,” Imam Syamsi Ali said. “That’s why we Muslims say, Alhamdulillah when we’re having troubles, because Allah educates us until we reach the perfectness of our mentality, of our mindset, our patience and perseverance.”

Over a span of 13 years from his 1996 arrival in the US, Imam Syamsi Ali has seen his community multiples. At the time he was assigned to manage the then fledgling Al-Hikmah Mosque. Today it is a vibrant house of worship, fundraising, weekend Arabic school, interfaith workshop, monthly bazaar and wedding venue. At least a thousand have converged during Idul Fitri holiday, making the two level shrine favorite among its community, thanks in part to its women’s volley ball team who clinched first place during the 3rd annual Muslim Olympic Games in New Jersey.

The US doesn’t track population by religion, but Islamicity.com estimates over seven million Muslims are in America. As of December 2008, there are 2,300 mosques, Islamic schools and organizations located throughout the 50 states, with major concentration in DC, New York and California. Approximately 65% of Muslim Americans are first generation of immigrants, while 61% born in the 90’s or later. Pakistanis and South Asian descents represent 34% of population, followed by 26% Arabs and 25% African Americans.

“This makes it easier for Muslims to move forward,” said Syamsi Ali, who is also imam at the Jamaica Muslim Center in Queens. “Prejudice will be less. Misunderstanding will be less. Ignorance about Islam will be less. That’s welcoming news.”

Since its inception in 1986 NECO, which is an umbrella of 250 member groups, pays homage to American diversity and pluralism. Medalists are recognized for personal and professional contributions to communities while preserving the richness of their individual cultural heritage. Through shared common compassion and philanthropy, America will hopefully remain prosperous and secure in the land of freedom and opportunity.

But, as recession drags on, will the promise of American Dream survive a broken system?

THE ECONOMIC CHALLENGE

From economic stand point, the forecast remains gloomy. The US employment climbed from 8.5% to 8.9% in April, leaving nearly 14 million workers jobless. Average Americans are scrambling to make ends meet, from losing properties and retirement funds to filing for bankruptcy and unable to get loans.

“The American Dream is quiet a resilient idea,” said Princeton Sociologist Kathrine Newman on Minnesota Public Radio interview. “It will take 50 years of this kind of recession to convince us that it’s impossible. Americans are pretty optimistic, a can do bunch.”

According to a 2009 MetLife study, the positive attitude is shared by 83% of survey participants. They agree the US remains top nation abundant in opportunities.

“To think that people can come with nothing to this country and succeed or at least have their children or grand children succeeded?” asked Medalist John Podesta, former White House chief of staff under Bill Clinton who headed President Obama’s transitional team.

Between his speeches, the author of “The Power of Progress: How America’s Progressive Can (Once Again) Save Our Economy, Our Climate and Our Country,” slightly leaned forward and kept his smile. He said while in the past, getting riches was too often the goal; people today seek sufficiency in life and are re-evaluating priorities.

Mr. Podesta urges world leaders to combat threats of global warming, “the biggest market failure in history” and views the US as its primary contributor. He argues the efforts will transform traditional fuel-based technologies into low carbon emission productions; hence, create nearly four times as many innovative “green jobs,” infrastructures, skill trainings and research developments. He is “enthusiastic” and applauds President Obama for signing the $787 million stimulus package that includes “major investment” bill, calling it a step closer to producing energy sufficiency and renewable energy.

<img src="http://ar1ta.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/2009-ellis-island-syamsi-ali-medals-of-honor-0509-029a.jpg?w=300&h=241" alt="Nasser J.
Mr. Podesta grew up in Chicago and is of Italian and Greek descents. He graduated from Knox College class of ’71 and Georgetown University Law Center class of ’76. Currently he serves as CEO of The Center for American Progress in Washington, DC.

For Hamid Biglari, vice chairman of Citigroup with 16 years of experience on strategy issue, the journey to reviving the moribund economy may well be longer but in the end the situation will resolve on its own.

“It’s a question we ask ourselves every day, because in many ways the financial system forms the arteries of the global economy,” he said. “But as long as everyone is pulling together and not engaged in finger pointing or scapegoating, we’ll succeed because we’ve been through this before.”

Mr. Bigalri who earned MS and PhD degrees in Astrophysical Science from Princeton University was “humbled” to be one of 28 Iranian medalists. A “born Muslim,” the 50 year-old Wall Street executive attributes individual faith as “stabilizing influence” to reaching a sense of equanimity in time of turbulence.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” he said. “It may not be rapid economy, but gradually we’re beginning to realize that it is a different country all together; a different part of economy that requires the level of financial system and capital they deserve.”

DEFINING AMERICAN DREAM

The American Dream has many different facets. It is defined as anything you want it to be. Many associate the term with immigrants, who had been historically driven to the US in search of a successful and satisfying life.

Ellis Island Museum

Between 1892 and 1925, over 12 millions passed Ellis Island while as much as 12,000 docked the shore of the New York Harbor on a busiest day in 1907. The tiny island of 28 acre was a gateway to wealth, freedom and opportunity – a brighter future for generations to come regardless of past circumstances. Today, the site is a major tourist destination and a museum; to some, it’s a reminiscent of the past.

Standing on top deck of Miss Freedom ferry against the backdrop of New York City skyline, Medalist Emilio Estefan gazed at the 306 feet tall copper-clad National Monument. He recalled flying over the Statue of Liberty from Spain as a toddler in the 60’s.

<img src="http://ar1ta.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/ellis-island-may-9-2009-imam-shamsi-ali-024-copy.jpg?w=300&h=225" alt="Gloria Estefan ( 1993 Ellis Island Medalist) & Husband Emilio J.
“When I first saw her I saw freedom, hope,” said the 56 year-old Cuban-born Grammy Award producer and songwriter. “I hope this will be a role model to the next generation of immigrant. If you work hard, you can get the recognition like tonight,” he added while embracing Gloria Estefan, wife of 21 years and 1993 medalist.

A NEWER DREAM

As the Ellis Island Medals of Honor Ceremony wound to an end Chairman Nasser J. Kazeminy, an Iranian who migrated to the US penniless in 1974 and is now CEO of NJK Holding Corporation ($40 million privately owned investment firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota) reminded the audience the make-up of American Dream that “thread the fabric of our country.” He echoed JFK’s 1961 inaugural address “Ask not what your country can do,” and that with hard work, faith and conviction, men can enjoy the challenge of opportunity and freedom every day. “Please, don’t take for granted the privilege of being an American,” he warned.

“Certainly to make a nice living and enjoy a good life are part of [American Dream,]” said Medalist Rabbi Alvin Kass, Chief Chaplin for the New York Police Department. “But the real essence of America is togetherness, loving your family, your neighbors.”

The 73 year-old son of Polish immigrants and former Air Force chaplain is a graduate of Columbia College in New York class of ’57, who is lean and has a kindly face. He has been wearing NYPD uniform for over 43 years. In so far as the current financial crisis, Rabbi Kass is hopeful for a quick turnaround. He also believes there is a blessing in disguise.

Rabbi Alvin Kass, NYPD

“While it creates hardship,” he said, “It gives us time to focus on what the good life is all about: able to say what you want to say; worship God according to tenet of your conscience; create an environment in which everyone recognizes his merits rather than any subjective or extraneous categories – all which will lift the spirit of your mind and heart.”

On the way to a Gala Dinner at the Ellis Island Great Hall’s Registry Room, which until 1954 served as immigration center, the Indonesian Consul General in New York Madame Trie Edi Mulyani appeared ecstatic, smiling endlessly in jubilation. She said watching fellow Indonesian received highest Congressional non-military gold medal award given to immigrants has left her speechless.

Madam Niniek (Trie Edi Mulyani), Consul General of Indonesia, NY

“Just one word,” said the 53 year old Honorable Mention Guest, who is also first among her peers as woman leading government authority to carry 15 eastern states under her jurisdiction. “I am so proud of him.”

Why?

“Because Imam Syamsi represents not only Indonesians in general, but to Indonesia as the world’s largest Muslim populated nation,” she replied.

It was nearly past midnight when Neil Diamond’s “America” song ended. The grand finale firework faded over America’s symbol of freedom, the Statue of Liberty. Yet, the following day was another important day for Imam Syamsi Ali, father of five children and husband to Muthiah Malik.

“I have to wake up early tomorrow for a fundraising,” he said, trying to balance hectic schedule between family, the mosques and fulltime employer at the Indonesian Mission to the UN in New York. He walked to the subway station with Maryam Zakyah, a shy 14 year old daughter who captured the memorable occasion throughout the evening on her Canon camera.

Despite tensions with the Muslim world and a prolonged economic inequality, the American Dream – although changing – is not lost. The definition itself has shifted from consumerism into something intangible, an idea to keep the dreamers believing into thinking forward. Everyone has a fair share to make good of current conditions and that they are in it together, because the rewards far outweighs the sacrifices.

“I am just doing my job,” said Imam Syamsi Ali. “As long as we do it for Allah; Allah will reward us, not necessarily here in this world, but in hereafter.”

Imam Syamsi Ali’ Education:

1. Muhammadiyah Islamic Boarding School (Pesantren): 1986
2. B.A in Tafseer from the International Islamic Univ. Islamabad-Pakistan: 1991
3. MA in Comparative Studies of Religions (International Islamic University) Islamabad-Pakistan: 1994
4. Ph.D in Political Science (Distant Learning) from Southern California Univ.: 2003

Back at the Ellis Island, Imam Syamsi Ali’s name is forever enshrined on the walls along side six former presidents; Boxer Muhammad Ali; Collin Powel, secretary of state under George Bush; Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; Real Estate Developer Donald Trump; Holocaust Survivor Elie Wiesel and 2000 plus past honorees.

And the American Dream lives on.

It was “unapproachable and distant” at time. Yet by June first, through constant prayers, courage and perseverance, Ayesha Siddiqui who is a 34 year-old Pakistani Muslim, finally claimed her dream and was awarded gold medal in honor of her distinguished academic records.

“These magnificent accomplishments would not have been possible without the blessings of our supreme creator, the supports of families, friends and encouragements of our professors, faculties and administration,” she said. “[And] I stand before you today, telling you that dreams do come true.”

That Monday morning, the Wamu Theater at Madison Square Garden was swarmed in black ropes and caps where Ms. Siddiqui shared “a glorious day” delivering her valedictory address for New York City College of Technology 69th Annual Commencement Ceremony. Approximately 1,800 graduating class of 2009 along with loved ones cheered and applauded in their approval, as City Tech President Russell K. Hotzier recognized the feature speaker to be the first advertising design and graphic arts student in school’s history to earn 3.98 Grade Point Average out of a perfect 4.0.

In between her soft-spoken words, the petite married mother with two young boys dedicated her Bachelor of Technology Degree in Communication Design to “beloved father, who suddenly passed away” in November 2008.

Ayesha Siddiqui delivers valedictory address (photo courtesy Alberto Vargas of City Tech)

“It was the greatest loss of my life,” Ms. Siddiqui said; her tears began; her voice trembled with emotion. “But my father’s greatest wish was for me to believe in myself and to see me succeed in life.”

The confidence and eagerness to discover new ideas set Ms. Siddiqui to pursue higher education, because knowledge is life’s pre-requisite she said, quoting President Obama. She also gained inspirations from her surrounding, particularly Judith Wilde who is former professor at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, where she obtained Associates Degree in Graphic and Illustration with a GPA of 3.975.

At City Tech, Ms. Siddiqui honed her artistic talent to create illustrations, branding and typography, including the Arabian Tales typeface which won a Presidential Award. She found group interactions beneficial in preparing a profession in graphic design.

“The respect I had for everyone around me, for their individuality, diversity enabled me to develop patience and understanding,” she said. “[It] developed my leadership skill.”

In her speech, Ms. Siddiqui encouraged fellow graduates to work hard despite all odds. The future generation will live a prosperous and tranquil life when works on humanity and global peace take priority. She cited the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) on equality, because in God’s eyes people are equal regardless of race or skin color:

Ayesha Siddiqui delivers valedictorian address (photo courtesy of Alberto Vargas of City Tech)

“An Arab has no superiority over a non Arab, nor a non Arab has superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over a white – except by piety and good action.”

Ms. Siddiqui believes the message, which the Prophet shared during his last sermon over 1,400 years ago in the Uranah valley of Mount Arafat, illustrates the importance of solidarity in closing the gap between individual differences. It also resonates in today’s word, where opportunities abound for everyone to reach higher goals in life. And, as Barack Obama was able to become the first African American president in US history, she too, became the first female Pakistani Muslim valedictorian.

“I was telling my mother in-law, imagine if he was here today,” said Ms. Siddiqui’s husband, Mr. Muhammed Anwar, of the late father in-law. “He’d be jumping around; the kind of person he was. So Allah blesses his soul.”

To Ayesha Siddiqui, life is a learning process filled with “roller coaster ride but a ride worth taking.” She shaped a desire of becoming ambassador to world peace by translating her passion to draw into messages of tolerance, equality, diversity and acceptance. She encountered unfamiliar territories along the way, from grasping the industry concept without prior knowledge to answering questions regarding her faith.

“Designs make certain taboo which people have that designers might have to look a certain way,” she said, smiling. Her black hijab framed her youthful face. “I don’t think so. If I’m good; if I’m creative; if I work hard, I’ll make a mark.”

But with current economic downturn, what is the prospect of landing a job? Survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers indicates that only 20% of the 2009 college graduates had a job lined up prior to graduation; a sharp decline compared to 51% in 2007.

“My chance is 50-50,” said Natasha Marcene, fellow graduate and international student from Trinidad. “People are getting laid off and they’ll look for new talent with less pay. So, I’d been advised to be more diverse and think outside the box.”

In case Ms. Marcene’s plan of working in the industry turns sour, she won’t quit. “Even if I decide to go back, I can bring the design experience.”

A.Siddiquii and Bonne August, City Tech provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Representatives from City Tech urge the graduates to remain optimistic. “Let people see your passion,” said Bonne August, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Show how much you care about what you’re doing. It will help you stand out.”

Judith Wilde, former mentor said, “Today is difficult, but I think Ayesha has a special gift, because she brings so much cultural diversity to the situation. I suspect she’s going to find something, a good niche for her, where she belongs, where she could help people.”

At age six Ms. Siddiqui moved to a small town Salalah, Sultanate of Oman, only to discover colleges were off limits to immigrants. With financial sacrifices, her late father advised she returned to her birthplace in Karachi, Pakistan to study.

By 1996, Ms. Siddiqui received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Karachi University; and shortly after married Muhammed Anwar, a New York resident who encouraged continuing her education in the US. After years of delay in immigration process, they were eventually reunited in New York in 2000.

“Many of you will face [hardships] in the future,” she cautioned. “[Don’t] give up, but find your strength from your weakness and your gain from your loss.”

In order to finance Ms. Siddiqui’s education Mr. Anwar, who earned a Master’s Degree in Medical Technology from St. John’s University in Queens, worked from 11pm to 7 am seven nights a week at Maimonides Medical Center’s blood bank. And since relatives were away in Pakistan, she became doubtful of balancing the workload between studies and domestic life. It was her husband who convienced otherwise.

<img src="http://ar1ta.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/city-tech-graduation-syamsi-ali-ayesha-msg-june-1-2009-0292.jpg?w=300&h=225" alt="A. Siddiqui, Imam Syamsi Ali, NYS Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, City Tech President Russell K. Hotzler

Ayesha Siddiqui’s success story is significant to Syamsi Ali, Chairman of the Indonesian Muslim Community in New York and imam at the Islamic Cultural Center New York, the largest Mosque in the City. He said her dedication “makes us proud,” and it was an honor to deliver the first Islamic invocation to US college graduates on behalf of the Muslim community.

“When Muslims are involved in such a big event, people acknowledge that Islam is here,” said 42 year old Indonesian born who is also a recipient of the 2009 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. “Muslims are contributing positively to America and the world.”

During the prayer, Imam Syamsi Ali recited verses of the Holy Qur’an, including surah `Alaq (creation of man). He reminded City Tech graduates to be thankful of the knowledge and wisdom God bestows and to be fully mindful of His mercy.

“Possibilities and impossibilities rest in [God’s] hands,” Imam Ali said. “And we look in the future with determination and high optimism. With [God] nothing is impossible.”

Ayesha Siddiqui overcame the unexpected turns in life with full support of family, and has strived in becoming “an extremely modern woman,” acknowledged Robin Bargar, dean of The School of Technology and Design.

“I think this is the reward that we got, because of [father in-law’s] prayers and we should be thankful to Allah and everyone else around,” Mr. Anwar said.

And although she longs to receive calls from her father whenever she got an A grade, Ms. Siddiqui still senses his presence. She is at ease, because “I’ll be his pride and that’s how he raised me.”

For schoolmate Natasha Marcene valedictorian Ayesha Siddiqui is both inspirational and humble.

Before ending the ceremony, City Tech President Russell K. Hotzier asked the graduates to believe in their dreams; no matter what they may be; no matter how difficult.

“As you leave, you’ll be in the heart of a great city,” he said. “A city that’s driven by ambition and talents from all corners of the world. It symbolizes the unlimited opportunity. It also serves as engines of life with all that’s possible, and even with what may appear to be impossible.”

At the moment, Ayesha Siddiqui is in no hurry. “The family is expecting me to be back in the kitchen,” she said. “I’ll miss the train and state of panic. Now, I feel empty there’s no more deadline. So, let’s see what I can do. It’s always something good.”
